My drawing to California Academy of Science building

Things that I notice during drawing
- Roof of this building has 3 small hills. The color of roof looks good with surrounding area.
- The outer wall have unique texture. It has grid texture which made building look more beautiful.
- I can feel balanced by 2 dorms figure. And the proportion of the two dorms are 50:50.

This video introduces California Academy of Science. After watching video, I felt like traveling there. There are many different spaces for different purpose of exhibition. It is amazing that the real animals can live in that building. It is like a small zoo. And the dorm is transparent. So, people can look at the inside from outside. It makes people feel like the space is more huge and wide. Also, one of interesting things is planetarium that kids might like, people can see the movie or video at there.

I found 2 books in the architecture library. The first book, "Renzo Piano" is about the architecture who built California Academy of Science. The book introduces many buildings built by Renzo and says draft design, beauty, functionality, intent of each buildings. The second book is about eco-friendly designed buildings. California Academy of Sciences is introduced as an example in this book.

1.  Reduced energy consumption
The efficiency about energy consumption of this building is great. For example, 90% of regularly occupied spaces will have access to daylight, so it reduces energy consumption for heating and lighting. And used water from the city will be used again in the toilets, and it reduces the use of portable water by 90%.



2. Recycled Building Materials
Over 90% of the demolition waste from the old Canlifornia Academy of Science building was recycled. 9,000 tons of concrete were reused in Richmond roadway construction, 12,000 tons of steel were recycled, and 120 tons of greenwaste were recycled on site. All concrete contains 30% fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants.


3. The native plants in roof become a resource for a wide variety of wildlife.
It provides habitats and food to wildlife animals. The animals, native birds, bees, butterflies, and insects, are attracted by native plants in roof. They actually get the food from plants like strawberries, tidy tips, sea pink in there.

==> There is a review of California Academy of Sciences building. The author of review said about beauty of roof. And the writer said that roof design is like a piece of natural topography. I agree with that opinion. The roof makes this building not boring. And I knew that the windows of roof have computer-controlled sensors and motors, so they can control by themselves for modifying temperature.

This picture shows that people can cross the rain forest exhibition area using corridors and stairs. They provide opportunity people to access the plants more closely. So, people can get close to the various kinds of plants and feel the nature more directly. Also, because the corridors are placed by across the plants or side of the internal space, it is minimized to disrupt growth of plants or naturality of them [1].

Surrounding of California Academy of Science consists of green area having other museums, libraries, parks, and lake. It is originally in the center of city, but nearby area is other facilities and natural places. This surrounding looks good on the purpose and figure of this building.

The building consist of 2 dorms. One is the planetarium, and the other dorm is the rain forest canopy. This dorm exhibits rain forest plants and it is linked to aquarium in basement [1].

Purpose  & Function
     Main purpose of this building is to provide education and trigger interest to people in science. It has exhibition about natural history and other museums. The academy institute also provide place for researchers. They have different fields as background and the institute publishes journal : Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences [1].

Users or program of the building
   The most of users are visitor to California Academy of Sciences. Some of them are local people living near by, students, or tourists. Also, scientists are main users of this building. They have exhibits following different topics ; for example, there are exhibition about Osher Rainforest, Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium, hands-on exhibits(people can touch live animal here), Human Odyssey. The building have also place for dinning and shopping for visitors [2].
